Summer is coming and with it the sunny and hot weather. Especially these days, it is appropriate that each of us paid attention to adequate fluid intake. For diabetics, it is doubly true.

The six principles of good drinking regime for people with diabetes:

1. If diabetic don’t treat with kidney disease, or heart disease, it should drink per day 2,5-3l fluids.
2. Suitable beverages include water, possibly flavored with lemon juice, sweetened mineral water, herbal, black or green tea.
3. We can sweetened with artificial sweetener, e.g. aspartame, acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate.
4. For the sweetening of beverages for diabetics are unsuitable substitute sugars, i.e. fructose, sorbitol, lactose.
5. When hyperglycemia comming, diabetics have to drink more!
6. One hundred percent fruit juice is used only in small quantities for flavoring water or mineral water (containing large amounts of fructose, although they are not sweetened)

How often do we drink?

We should drink evenly throughout the day. If diabetics don’t treat with kidney disease, or heart disease, they should drink per day 2,5-3l fluids. In patients with diseases of the heart or kidney determines drinking regime their physician specialist.

Suitable beverages include water, possibly flavored with lemon juice, sweetened mineral water, herbal, black or green tea.

Hyperglycemia diverts water from the body

If blood sugar (blood glucose) is greater than 10 mmol / l, sugar (glucose) leaves the body through urine and entrains water. Secreted amounts of water is therefore higher than would correspond to the needs of the organism. So easily will reduce the total volume of water in the body below standard – to dehydration.

In some patients, the sugar in urine secrete even at higher or lower levels of blood glucose over 10 mmol / l.

Special attention must be paid to fluid intake elderly people with age is reduced sensation of thirst. It is necessary to monitor daily water intake. If it is low, the patient must drink from diabetes in force.

Drinking never limited (if the doctor did not order)

A common mistake that a diabetic patient encounter is to limit intake of fluids to the patient avoids frequent urination.

Increased water excretion from the body of the patient diabetes is a manifestation of unsatisfactory blood glucose values rather than excessive fluid intake.

Restrictions of drinking does not solve the problem, on the contrary it deepens. The lower fluid intake, the more water in the body and lacks glucose so forth rises (the same amount of sugar is dissolved in a smaller volume of water – a relative increase in blood glucose levels).

Conversely, if the blood sugar levels are higher for some reasons, it is advisable to increase the intake of water. When you restore a proper drinking regime glucose level falls slightly.

We must not forget to water loss through sweating. Fluid intake should reflect on each person temperature of the environment in which it operates.

Mineral water or tea

We sweetened with artificial sweetener, e.g. aspartame, acesulfame, saccharin, cyclamate.

The sweetening of beverages for diabetics are unsuitable substitute sugars, i.e. fructose, sorbitol, lactose.

If accepted dissolved in the solution rapidly increases blood sugar.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the word “light”. This indicates a reduced amount of energy in the product and not the fact that it is intended for diabetics. “Light” product may be, in this case sweetened beet sugar (sucrose) or grape sugar (glucose).

It is always necessary to seek information on the sweetener used and the amount of carbohydrates contained in the product.

Milk also contains carbohydrates.

Diabetics with type 2 can drink or use in the preparation of food to 0.5 liters of milk per day without being counted in the amount of carbohydrates consumed. Other diabetics, failing to if their doctor differently milk to the total daily intake of carbohydrate counting. Milk is considered more as a food than a beverage contains, besides sugar and fats, and proteins. We choose instead skimmed milk (2% fat), it will also ensure intake of calcium and fat-soluble vitamins.

One hundred percent fruit juice

Diabetics only used in small quantities for flavoring water or seltzer. While these concentrates are not sweetened in manufacture, it is present in them large amounts of sugar from fruit.
