In addition to looking at the weight, your waist measurement indicate if your overweight puts you at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Waist circumference is important to know when the dangerous fat sits on your stomach and increases your risk of diabetes.

You have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes if you:

  • is a woman with a waist circumference greater than 88 cm
  • the man with a waist circumference greater than 102 cm

NB! To measure your waist properly, place a tape measure around the waist midway between the lower ribs and the top of your hip bone.

The link between obesity and diabetes

Obesity impairs insulin sensitivity, which can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes.

Impaired insulin sensitivity means that the body’s cells can not absorb sugar from the food we eat. Instead of the cells takes up the sugar and convert it to energy, it accumulates in the blood and provide a high blood sugar.

When cells do not absorb the sugar from food, hitting the pancreas alarm and are working harder and harder to produce more insulin.Insulin is effectively the substance that helps the sugar to penetrate into the cells.

When the pancreas long time has been working overtime becomes tired, and insulin production decreases significantly. The sugar can still not penetrate the cells. Instead, it flows in the blood, come out with urine and gives the term unpleasant complications.
